    Notre-Dame Paris Moves to LED Lights

    Highlighting 850 years of history and paying tribute to a masterpiece.






    In this architectural masterpiece over 400 luminaries were used with an installed capacity of just 30,000 watts compared to the 140,000 watts previous consumed, reducing the electricity consumption by over 80 percent.

    With Philips new LED lighting technology, the lighting creates a reverent atmosphere with no dazzling glare and always a warmth you’d expect from incandescent lights.



    The Virgin and Child statue which was moved to Notre-Dame in 1818 is the most famous of the thirty seven representations that the cathedral displays. The LED lighting reveals the intricate details of this renowned work of art.



    The LED spot lights define the character of sculptures and linear LED lights provide a gentle light highlighting the arches around the cathedral.



    Positioned at the northern and southern entrances, more than 50 metres from the rose windows sits two 250 watt LED spotlights that are virtually invisible, directing their light beams towards each rose window, presenting the delicacy of the sculptures.



    The impression created by the LED lighting makes the stained glass window seem to radiate light without altering the exterior appearance.


    Notre Dame, with almost 14 million visitors in 2013, is an international icon and making the switch to LED lighting reduced the electricity consumption to a fifth of what it was originally, increased life span to around 13 years at 10 hours a day, and significantly reduced maintenance costs. No longer is scaffolding and moving furniture required every year, and the dynamic LED lighting makes it possible to adjust the atmosphere by switching colours and intensity easily.

    The project’s lighting designer Armand Zadikian explains: “The Cathedral has two roles, a religious one and a cultural one, with religious ceremonies, visits and concerts. The new lighting was therefore designed to allow different atmospheres to be created depending on these activities”.

    Benjamin Azoulay, GM of Philips Lighting France says, “Philips is very proud to have placed its know how and technology at the service of this splendid project. For us the challenge was to devise effective lighting while respecting the authenticity of this monument, which attracts several million visitors every year. The lighting really had to enhance the beauty of the site without at any time overwhelming it”.
