Who is Lighting Matters?

So, who is Lighting Matters?

We (Lighting Matters) are a business based in Victoria, Australia that is dedicated to sourcing high quality LED lighting products for domestic and light commercial applications.

The Beginning

The company director, James Stapledon first started his endeavours in sustainability with a business called Energy Matters where he designed solar photovoltaic systems for a massive client basis but during his time realised something was missing. Energy Efficiency.

During his time at ‘EM’ he understood that customers who purchased solar were only truly better off financially if their power consumption was reduced, so the ability to export power back to the grid was achieved.

Thus, the saying REDUCTION BEFORE PRODUCTION was born.

Whilst there were already initiatives out there to improve energy efficiency, one particular common aspect present in all buildings was still not properly addressed. Lighting.

Realising that there was no easy way to change halogen downlights into anything less power hungry, the journey began and Lighting Matters was born in late 2009.

LED Lighting

During 2009 there was much talk (and still is) about LED lighting becoming the way of lighting the future.

At the time there was a minimal product range to choose from in Australia and even overseas. The best LED light to replace our 50W halogen downlight that we could find was 5 watts, produced a very blue cool white light and didn’t work on our existing transformer.

:(

We were bummed, and our $45 LED light just couldn’t do what we wanted it to, replace our halogen, like for like, with no compromises.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps were becoming more efficient, but we were held back from considering these due to the hazardous material (mercury) found inside, low recyclability and poor start up time.

So we began researching, studying and testing everything we could find. Over the past two years, development in LED technology has advanced significantly and guess what we kept up.
